My art often funds the AHAT fund at the Northern Regional Rockies Office of the Humane Society of the US. Here is what Dave Pauli, NRRO HSUS director, says about my contributions.

First... let me personally thank YOU for your continued contributions to the AHAT fund via donation of a percentage of your artwork sales. Your generosity touches the lives of many different animals each month. The AHAT fund is one of six "restricted use" special funds that the NRRO maintains. ( we also have an Alaskan Outreach/ Spay Neuter/ Wildlife rescue/ Native Nations/ and Rescue Trailer funds) Restricted use is just that... restricted to that particular use.. the funds do not go to general operations and do carryover at years end if there is a balance. The AHAT fund was started 13 years ago as the way to fund our Animal Health Assessment Teams which provided county sheriffs with the trained teams to provide health assessment during cruelty cases or disasters teams. As mentioned previously... professional veterinary care is a key element of nearly every cruelty case or animal rescue. Any animal transported out of state needs a health certificate, and most require special meds or treatment. No HSUS regional office budget nor local humane society budget seemed to ever have the contingency funds to pay for these necessary and often life-saving services.

The AHAT fund never really gets very large, and has on several occasions evaporated ...as the demands for DVM services, special care, meds or special diets always appear. Last month I made a trip to the grocery store and frugally spent almost $50 to buy a months special diets needed to feed the injured pelican, soft diet rat, seven turtles, feral cats and litter of rez dog pups that were in our system. The regular budget of The HSUS regional office is simply not set up with a line item for frozen smelt, and the other special needs diets for this menagerie! So the AHAT fund comes to the rescue every week and allows us to reach out and improve the lives of animals that we otherwise could not. The AHAT fund is truly the go to restricted use account that makes the emergency treatment of many many animals possible

I just finished painting this darling Shitzu. It's been a very busy Christmas season with lots of commissions for surprise Christmas gifts. I wish I could be a mouse in the corner when people open their gifts and find one of my paintings of their special dog. I often get thank you notes from strangers who tell me all about it.

Scotties, Norwich and Wire Fox Terriers are all recent drawings of mine available on ebay. I recently received an email from one of my patrons. She said that she enjoyed my terrier paintings because I captured the impish nature of these dogs. There is nothing quite like a spunky terrier to remind you that you have to stay on your toes to out think them. For example, my Welsh was trained to drop a forbidden item in exchange for a treat. This worked well the first 7 years. Then he realized that this was a barter system. Now he is on the out look for any forbidden item that gets to his level, so that he can get the attention and barter from us. Luckily we train our terriers that they could never go out the front door. Guests and solicitors come to the front door so this is very a critical training accomplishment. A terrier's "chase instinct" can have him over the hill and gone from sight in seconds. Many terriers are ratters. They were breed for getting rid of the rodents. Terriers worked alone cornering rats and other vermin that plagued the farms. So if they see a squirrel they are off doing what they have been breed to do.

Wire Fox Terriers are a wonderful breed of dog. Here is my latest painting of a Wire Fox that will be listed on ebay.

The Wire Fox in my painting has a forever home where he is a full family member. His family takes excellent care of him. I wish all dogs were as lucky as he is.

All dogs, have some basic needs. A "need" is something that dogs have to have in order to survive and thrive. Water, food and shelter are basic needs. All dogs need fresh water, food and a place to get out of the sun in the summer and the cold in the winter. After these basic survival needs are met, they need a pack. Dogs are pack animals. They need interaction from their packs. Humans become part of their dog's pack. Many people don't understand how harmful it is to ignore and isolate a dog. Make sure that you and your family take time for your dog. He needs your leadership and your attention so that he knows he is an accepted member of your pack.

Thankfully, there are a number of animal charities that help the homeless and discarded animals. Please see arthelpinganimals.com for more information about the charities who support these needy animals.

I have a special place in my heart for terriers. Terrier tend to be spunky, intelligent dogs that can get into trouble without some human leadership. The first time I took my terrier to a dog obedience training session, I was among several labs puppies. There were no other terriers in the class. The trainer took a lab puppy, placed her in a down position. The lab puppy was precious as she stayed in the down position even though it was obvious the little puppy was thoroughly confused. The other little labs obeyed with various charming responses. I was the only one who had a little puppy so excited that he was bouncing off the ceiling. Needless to say, a "down position" was not going to happen in that environment. I quickly learned that terriers needed some different ways to train them. Luckily I was able to study with an expert in animal behavior and learned how to provide appropriate leadership for my little guy. Terriers are so cute as puppies, but they are often in need of rescue because their families haven't figured out how to apply appropriate leadership. So here are two Wire Fox Terriers in a contemporary painting which is being sold on ebay to provided rescue to those canines who may need a little love and training.

Airedales and Praire Potholes

It's amazing how one person making an effort can make a difference.

I was reading the newspaper this morning and stumbled across this article that gave me hope. A North Dakota farmer who had plowed under acres and acres of wetland 25 years ago is restoring the wetlands and prairie potholes. Prairie potholes are places that have the water vital to bird and animal life in the prairie climate. This spring on one stop to a prairie pothole I was able to see Red winged black birds, muskrats, meadowlarks, mud hens, ducks, frogs, and turtles. These little mini environments are vital to the birds and wildlife. A special thank you to a farmer from North Dakota who is restoring wetlands for animals. One person making a difference.
